The trade is half the deal
Most equipment deals include a trade-in, and the trade is where deals go sideways. Value it too high and you lose money. Value it too low and you lose the deal. Anvil Pro lists trade appraisals as part of its sales flow, so the appraisal and the quote live together instead of in separate notes.
What a good appraisal process looks like
- The trade's year, model, hours, and condition are recorded once.
- Photos attach to the appraisal, not a phone camera roll.
- The appraisal value flows into the quote math.
- A manager can see every open appraisal and its age.
- The trade's details are ready for resale listing later.
A worked example
A contractor trades a 2021 skid steer with 1,400 hours toward a new one at $58,000. The appraisal values the trade at $31,000 with $9,500 still owed on it. The real amount to finance is $58,000 minus $21,500 of trade equity. Hypothetical numbers, but the shape is real: the trade math is the deal math, and it belongs inside the quote, not in a notebook.
Do this week
Pull your last ten deals with trades. Count how many had the trade value written somewhere separate from the quote. Each one is a place the numbers could have drifted apart.
A worked task: the appraisal-to-quote chain
Suggested demo test: appraise a trade and watch its value flow into the quote without re-typing. Inputs: one trade unit with hours, condition notes, and a payoff. Expected output: the quote's real amount to finance, with the trade math visible. The exception that kills deals: an appraisal that lives in a note field. Notes do not flow into math, and a trade value typed twice will eventually be typed wrong.
Do this week
Count how many of last month's deals had a trade. If it is more than half, the appraisal flow deserves as much demo time as the quote itself.
| Field | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Year, model, hours | Sets the trade's value |
| Condition notes and photos | Ends the argument later |
| Payoff owed | Sets the real trade equity |
| Appraisal date | Values go stale |
